CNBC ranks Oklahoma's economy sixth in the nation

A new CNBC report ranked Oklahoma No. 1 in cost of living and third in cost of doing business. “America’s Top States for Business 2010” also ranked the state’s economy as the nation’s sixth best. The state ranked 25th overall, dropping two spots from 2009.

The typical outlet mall shopper will drive considerably farther than a traditional mall shopper, said Alison Oshel, director of community redevelopment for the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber. Because Oklahoma City's Outlet Shoppes will be close to the city's museums, attractions and plenty of places to eat, it should bring in more tourists than an outlet mall built in the middle of nowhere, which was the historical development model, she said.

Faced with lower-priced foreign competition and a tough economy, the Oklahoma aerospace industry is developing new techniques for maintenance and repair of aircraft and building innovative engines that use biofuels. Oklahoma's aerospace industry is an essential part of the state's economy. According to the Oklahoma Aerospace Alliance, the industry is responsible for more than 143,000 jobs in the state, a $5 billion annual payroll, and nearly $12 billion in industrial output or about 10 percent of Oklahoma's economy. Oklahoma is home to both the world's largest military aviation MRO at Tinker Air Force Base and commercial MRO facility at the American Airlines Engineering and Maintenance Center in Tulsa.

Oklahoma Economy Adds 4,000 New Jobs in March

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced this morning that the Oklahoma unemployment rate fell to 6.6% in March (from 6.8% in February). The best news though was that the establishment survey indicates that the Oklahoma economy created 4,000 new jobs last month, with strong gains in the "Education & Health Services" and "Manufacturing" sectors.

Most importantly, "health care in Edmond will become stronger," he said.




Tissue maker has Oklahoma City plans

A Georgia-based company that makes private-label tissue products will open a new plant in Oklahoma City in June, the company's first facility in the Southwest. "Oklahoma City has one of the most progressive business climates in the nation, and I'm glad Cellu Tissue recognized what we could bring to the project," said Robin Roberts Krieger, vice president of economic development for the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber.
